Moving Data Servers from the Site…to the Clouds!

November 28th, 2011

For many projects, especially those with standard radio modems, project servers have to be located close to the site to gather the data that is wirelessly and continuously transmitted. Cell modems, however, continuously deliver data packets through the Internet which means that the data server CAN be moved away from site offices and trailers to the centralized and off-site Greenlight System Data Center.

  • Shifts sensitive and expensive servers away from dust, debris, the occasional coffee spill, and anything else the operator can throw at it.
  • Reduces costs for clients with multiple Greenlight System jobs by using a single server to administer multiple sites!  The Greenlight System’s web-based project pages can be securely accessed onsite, at the office, at the client’s office, or on any Internet-capable phone.
  • Adds accessibility for troubleshooting and IT– including nights! (Further reduces client liability and costs)
  • Replaces a dedicated server for smaller or shorter jobs where the additional hardware costs may not be practical or feasible.
  • Eliminates the power issues frequently associated with site trailers which can disrupt server functionality, corrupt databases, and insert gaps in real-time monitoring.  (Fixing a corrupt database from a power failure can take up to two hours!)
  • Adds greater flexibility when designing a monitoring plan.

Today, the Greenlight System offers multiple data storage options:  USB drive for direct download (“Datalogger”) from the field stations, on-site servers and the off-site Greenlight System Data Center. When it comes to site monitoring and planning, the Greenlight Environmental Monitoring System offers the flexibility to meet the requirements of the site and safety or regulatory plan.
